The question is: Do I want that terminal speed enough to accept the higher cruising RPM and lower gas mileage that the 0.81 would give me the rest of the time.
Have to decide how much of a toy the car is.
One nice thing about the 0.81 is that the engine is wound up and ready to go in 5th for weaving traffic. However, the 3.94 will make a significant change in that direction also.
IMO, I would go with the .72 5th. That is based on how I use my Fiero which is primarily a weekend cruiser now. I preferred the 2.93 chainset over the 3.29 that I have in my car now (Although I really wish I had a manual).
I think the question you need to ask yourself is how much time are you actually going to spend above 135mph? Outside of standing-mile events, I can't think of too many times, even on race tracks, that you will be driving above that speed.
So, with that being said, I would say that if you plan on driving your car to your auto events, use the .72. If you are trailering your car, use the .81.
-edit for horrible grammar.
