Brembo OEM brake caliper info?

Post by ericjon262 »

I've been considering brake options for my car, and trying to find off the shelf options that hopefully either perform better, or remove weight, one of the options I'm most heavily exploring is Brembo calipers that came on a bunch of different vehicles, and I was hoping to "decode" or just get a general idea of what calipers physically interchange. From what I'm currently guessing, most of the differences in part numbers in some of the calipers, is merely paint/graphics.

Camaro, Corvette, and Cadillac CTS, the CTS caliper is different, but look at the 'Vette and Camaro caliper for more than a couple of seconds, and it looks like they might be the same part with different paint.

Here's another example, this time from a Polaris Slingshot, compare it to the Camaro and 'Vette parts, and again, you would have a hard time convincing me they aren't the same part.

I've only started my research, and I found this guide which covers most of the GM applications with metallic rotors, I'm fairly certain I've seen brembos on a wide range of cars OEM, including imports and Mopars, and I would be hard pressed to believe they are using unique calipers to their vehicles.

if anyone has information to add, I'd appreciate seeing it.

Scott's site (linked above) has some great info but also a lot of inaccuracies. I've emailed him before and he may have corrected some but I still see errors about rotor offsets. Other issue were about piston sizes for some calipers. So make sure you verify from another source before you commit to any parts.

The Corvette and Camaro calipers are the same parts with different paint.

There are many many interchanges between GM brake systems once you are on the C7 / Camaro5/6 / W body / CTS pattern. The caliper mounting pattern is the same, on the same radius from the wheel bearing axis. There are two different rotor offsets -- deep and shallow. The Corvette uses shallow offsets. The difference is in the lugs on the upright, not in the caliper.

Make sure to look up the replacement seals and pistons in a few catalogs to confirm the bore sizes for the particular calipers you are looking at though.

Thanks, I was wondering about the info on his site, it would be much easier to read in a different format, specifically a table.

ideally, I'm trying to get away from a caliper that had branding, I don't want brakes on my car that say "corvette", it's a Fiero, not a Corvette, and if I can pick something up without having to refinish it, that's a massive perk.

the other thing is that I'm trying to make sure I pair the caliper with a rotor that can fit under a 17" wheel, right now my current brakes might just barely clear a few 17's, but all of them I tried didn't.

I've got the Porsche Boxster brembo calipers on my Fiero with Wilwood rotors (the westcoastfiero kit) which fits under 17" RPF1s.

My understanding from the research I've done on the Porsche side is that all 4 piston Brembos are very similar (often the same brake pad), but they come in a few slightly different fitments for caliper width and piston sizes to account for balance and rotor size. For example my front and rear calipers use the same brake pad and would likely physically interchange from the looks of it, but the rear caliper pistons are a smaller diameter.

The Boxster calipers made sense to me as they were specced for a car with similar weight distribution and a similar master cylinder bore (and there's a ton of track pads made for Porsches). Maybe the base C8 Corvette calipers would work well on a Fiero if you wanted to stay in the GM OEM wheelhouse?

C8 base is same as C7. The calipers look a little different but same fitment. Same rotor diameter and hat offset. I'm using C8 rotors on my car with C7 calipers. They fit under 17s.

Pic is from before I upgraded to 18" wheels.
