My 2.0 DOHC powered red and black non-camo '88 Fiero Track Car

Post by Jalisurr »

Ok I couldn't resist with the title.

Now that my build is on the road and starting to see competition events, figured it was time to start a thread in this section for event summaries.

Build thread here: viewtopic.php?t=21822

As a little bit of a background if you don't want to read the thread, the main performance specs are:
1988 Fiero
Honda K20A2 Honda engine swap (naturally aspirated, ~200whp)
Honda 6 speed manual transaxle with Cusco clutch-type LSD
Westcoastfiero tubular rear suspension, front lower control arms, adjustable upper control arms
Westcoastfiero Koni 8610 rear coilovers
Westcoastfiero front springs + viking double adjustable coilovers
Porsche 986 brembo 4 piston brakes front + rear with 13" 2 piece wilwood rotors
Ecumaster Black ECU with ADU7 gauge screen
Weight ~2500lbs without driver

Back when I bought it 2 and a half years ago, with stock iron duke and skinny all season tires, I did one track day with it as a baseline. I turned a time of 1:36 at my local track, which is....very slow. For reference, when I used to compete in a C6 Z06 Corvette I did a 1:14. Only upwards from here!

First real competition event for this build: Ice racing.

Benefits of living as far north as I do, these events happen relatively nearby. There is no better way to very quickly and safely learn how a vehicle handles at, and well beyond, the limit than to go slide it around on a frozen lake for the day. There's nothing to hit, and everything happens in slow motion. I've been very successful at these events in AWD cars, but this would be a bit of a switch for me.

So I slapped some 225/45r17 studded winter tires on all four corners and headed up. This is probably the only time I'll be doing this type of event with this car (I'm building a rally car to cover loose surface events) but it's an extremely valuable experience, and a ton of fun. It's essentially a time trials event, but held on a course that is plowed into a frozen lake:

The car did pretty well all things considered. The relatively light weight makes it easier to change direction, and the rear weight bias gives it better acceleration traction than a lot of the other rwd cars. It has way more power than it could ever need on ice, I never even used the top half of the rev band. The diff was very predictible, though perhaps a little too aggressive

However a good drift car the Fiero is not. The rear weight bias also means it's fairly unforgiving at the limit, and the severe lack of steering angle means that even when under control, there were tight turns that I simply could not take the fast, sideways line around, because the front wheels couldn't turn far enough - exactly what drifters install modified steering geometry to combat, but in the Fiero even with relatively narrow, low offset wheels, the limitation is the inside of the wheel hitting the upper control arm. So I was stuck driving around a few places 'grip style', slowing down and waiting for the lateral grip to be able to take the corner normally.

I spun a lot, at least for the first few sessions. By the end of the first day I had started to figure out how to make the car do what I wanted, and by the end of the second day, I was one of the fastest RWD cars out there, and keeping a few of the Subarus with non-studded tires honest as well. The platform continues to prove itself to be pretty capable, I'm happy.

Over all, a very successful event. I feel very confident to be able to push the car hard now on a circuit where the margins for error are smaller. Hopefully I'll have a report from a circuit event within the next few weeks.

Here's an onboard of a few laps around the ice track

Hahaha, I love it! Awesome build. Ice racing looks like fun. Looking forward to seeing your report from the tarmac circuit...

I was very confused when I saw the title, For a minute, I thought Steven put a 2.0 in his car quietly and with a quickness to keep it on the track! I look forward to seeing how things go!

Alright, event report from Feb 22nd:

Mission Raceway is my local track, it's not big but it's a fun little road course. It had been raining very heavily the night before, but had stopped by the time the gates opened. There were some big puddles in a lot of places, so this wasn't going to be a day to set records. In preparation for a damp track I had equipped my 225 width (square) Continental ExtremeContact Sports which were stolen off my Audi daily driver.

First sessions out were pretty treacherous. The brake bias was nowhere near dialed in so I had a couple sketchy moments and blew a few brake zones as I got that adjusted. Took a whole bunch of stiffness out of my dampers to get a bit more weight transfer and that helped as well.

Car ran well throughout the day. I'm still getting my alerts dialed in and learning what the car will do. I had one session out where the oil pressure seemed low (around 50psi) so I brought the car in early but then it was back up to the usual 70-80psi for subsequent sessions. I'll be doing an oil change after this event to be safe.

Handling was pretty good. Slowly making changes to the dampers to get it dialed in. I'm happy with the alignment and spring rates at the moment. The car is pretty neutral, I can easily get the nose to tuck in by lifting the throttle and then drive out of the corner from the apex. It's a little bouncy at the moment but that'll likely improve when I dial the dampers back up.

The diff is still very aggressive. In the wet it's far too stiff, I may want to take it apart and rebuild it with less lock, but I want to get a bit more experience driving the car in the dry first.

By the end of the day, there was a fairly dry line around the track so I was able to push a little bit. The diff stopped being as much of a hinderance and the brakes started working with me rather than against. Still lots of time to find. The steering with the manual rack seemed totally fine, I was able to catch slides without too much trouble, so I think I'll leave it as is for now instead of pursuing a power steering conversion (if I were doing auto-x it would be a different story).

The best part is, I ended up winning my class (out of 6 cars in the class, mostly miatas). Now, a lot of the heavy hitters weren't out and I only won by a couple tenths, so not a huge celebration yet, but it's a good sign of things to come.

And of course, video of my fastest lap!

Hell ya dude. Those gear shifts look short and crisp. Sounds good too.
