Cold air intake, can you have too much of a good thing?

Well, I got 'er done! I've got a case of big shit eating perma grin from the bansheE whine she puts out at 3000 rpm, but I'll tell you what's up first.
First off, I had no idea that 4" pipe can't bend. So, Howard was counting on flexibility of the hose to get it through. After looking at my really thick rubber hose that I got yesterday, and the bend it needed to make, he also discovered that my K&N was only a 3.5" and not a 4". Don't ask me, I had a ruler with me when I bought it. So now he had to find a 3.5 inch pipe. All he had was a chrome exhaust tip for a truck. He welded that to a short length of 4" and we stuffed MONGO filter up in the fender. To give you an idea, the filter is sitting probably at 15 degrees off of vertical, and it completely fills the space between the exterior panel and the inner panel.

The hose that I picked up this afternoon looks like the shite drier hose that I had in the picture, but it's really a nice heavy rubber like a thin innertube material with a wire through it. Nice. A freebie cause I'm a hell of a guy.

I can not WAIT to put this on a dyno now that I've been doing the recent tuning on it. It's been so little, but it really feels noticably different. I doubt it will have any (or much) effect on peak numbers, but I'd like to see how it fills out the curve.

I thought you were going to replace the tube all the way up to the TB with a aluminum tube. I dint' think you were going to have that much of a black rubber tube on there. When you said coupler I was just thinking like somethng 3 inches long to join the tb and the peice of aluminum pipe.

Looks good though.

And if you do plan on going back to the dyno, put some 93 in it, disco the battery for a few minutes, plugs it back in and then drive it for a day or two to let the computer relearn on the 93. Then dyno it.

You are right taht filter = Teh large

Yeah, I thought so too. But that would have required a mandrel bend, and he can't bend anything bigger then 3". Fabricating some kind of elbow would have been $$$, looked like shit, and probably not added any benefit. I actualy like the fact that it almost looks OEM to someone who doesn't know what they are looking at.

And yeah, that filter = 2x stock Fiero V6 filter. I think I'll sell them to people for $100 to put on there rubber truck hoses.

BTW, he has that rubber tubing in diameters down to 2.5" if you're still looking for a Duke tube.

Don't necessarily need to unplug the computer. The OBDII computers include an octane test which is performed sometime shortly after the engine enters closed loop.

"OMFG lololololol Stimpy, don't you know, cold air intakes are totally for ricers! OMFG you're such a ricer lolololol."

J/k dude. Looks pretty well done. How much did it change how you hear the blower?

Oh dude, it's unreal. I never really heard the blower before. I used to always wonder what the big deal was that people where always talking about the blower whine. You can definately hear it sucking at idle, but at 3000 rpm it just HOWLS! The car just jumps off the throttle. Between the new IAC, the new O2 sensor, and the intake, this bitch runs better then it ever has since the swap was done. My dad might regret selling it when he checks this out.

For posterity's sake and future reference, some pics.

The stock V6 K&N next to the box the new one came in. Yep, it's really twice as big.

You're not going to fit more pipe through that hole without cutting.

Like it was made to go there.

Just a question for you guys.

I am buying Rus544's K&N he was using for his N*. It has a 3.5" inlet.

My N* TB is 4" outter diameter, but the butterfly its self isn't that big. The 3.5" K&N should flow plenty right?

Here is the same K&N on summit's site

Looking good. I gotta get off my ass and get restarted on mine.
Where is the IAT sensor hooked up at on your setup?

You know me and my familiarity with sensors. Is this what you're talking about?

I understand. In that case, take a piece of paper and write down how much money you want me to send you. Then take this piece of paper and put it in a box, along with the air filter, and mail it to:

Is that easier?

The thread hijack continues...

So I recieved a package in the mail the other day:

I was disappointed that it only turned out to be the air filter from Stimpy. The worst part is that now that I know "Cyndi" is Stimpy I'm going to have to throw away everything I've already recieved from her panty drawer.

I feel so unclean now.

Stimpy, you crack me up, dude. :thumbleft:

Oh, and you forgot this part:

I'll be out of town for a few days but I'll mail your $$ when I get back.
