I believe they do, he has mentioned having to fill up on premium, and that it gets better mileage when running it.

I actually think it's better nowadays to have to use premium gas, at least with N/A applications.

When gas was cheap, the % difference between regular and premium was larger than the gas mileage advantage that came from building a high compression engine that required premium. Now that the % diff between reg and prem is much smaller, it makes more sense to build a high compression engine that requires premium but gets better gas mileage. The cost per mile ought to be lower than a low compression engine burning regular.

This is my opinion, as I haven't run the numbers on this yet... any takers?

That is a question you will never really be able to find the answer to. It all depends on who you ask. I know a lot of people that run there cars on regular gas and have had no problems, but i choose to run premium. i think it really just comes down to preference. If you talk to a vw salesmen he will tell you that you dont need to run premium, but if you talk to a vw mechanic they recomend it. With my car the difference in power and km's to a tank makes it well worth running premium.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep looking at the Golfs then. It's good to know that you dont have to run premium though. So if I'm short on cash or something it won't be a big deal to put 87 in it. I had heard stories on NASIOC about bad things happening with 87 octane. I have a friend who works at a car dealer, I think I'll have him take me to the auto auction and I'll see what they have.
