Fiero maniac from Norway

Post by Mr. Fiero from Norway »

Hi there!

I got my Fiero Formula -88 in San Diego february 2000. Shipped the car to Norway an I run the car every summer....

I use the car every day, and run street legal cup in the weekends. Now the summer are over, and I would like to get some more power out of my 2.8 v6. Any one out here that can give me some tips?

this car has never crashed, the car still has the original paint, and I had no problemes in this 6 years I run it!!!

really depends on what you are allowed to do to the car in norway - engine swaps? or would a performance rebuild with a turbo be better?

when you import a car to Norway, you need to ceep it stock for 10 years. But they never test it, so if it looks stock.... no problems.

I can do a engine swap, if it looks stock. Turbo is no no... If I want to do a engine swap, I need to find this on the internet in the US, and ship i to Norway...

I think the best solution must be to do something to my 2.8, but engine swap is very temting!!!

You could get a pushrod 3.4 engine. It has more HP and torque and you can put on all the stock 2.8 dress up parts to make it look stock. You could also do a cam swap and change over to a carburated intake, plus some other stuff to get even more performance.

How many people in Norway know what a stock engine looks like? :thumbleft:

Swap in a 3.4 DOHC. V6, 210hp, plenty more with mods. Plus, there's the benefit that it's a straight forward/"easy" swap. And nobody would know...

to keep it actually stock looking then a 3.4 pushrod (basicly bore and stroke upgrade for the 2.8) plus other internal changes is about as far as you could go

but to keep it looking "like" stock to someone who doesn't know fieros then a 3.4 dohc or a 3800sc can easily look like a stock engine in the fiero they are 210 and 240 hp respectively

the supercharger ont he 3800 would be a little suspicious but it i a more reliable engine - there is always a 3800NA but IMO they aren't worth the work..

you can get about 200 whp out of a 3.4 pushrod swap if you port and polish everything, use a good cam, make exhaust headers, and make a few hidden improvements to the upper intake that remove restritions and increase its volume.

Sorry dude, no way in frozen hell would you get 200 horse to the wheels on a 3.4L pushrod engine... They dyno at 223hp at the crank when done to the nuts.

how did anyone dyno at the crank to exactly 223? either way that is "about" 200 at the wheels..

thats about as good as you can do and still keep it looking like the stock engine

To keep this organized for you there are 2 options listed so far.

1: built up 3.4 pushrod out of say a 95 camaro.
2: a 3.4 DOHC motor out of say a lumina or montecarlo.

1: is very easy to keep looking stock by putting your old 2.8 intake and accesories on.

2: is impossible to keep looking stock, but is a fairly easy swap and has good power out of the box. and responds well to mods.

How much can you really get away with?

orief / Dave / mastermind (whatever he is called) di have his engine dynod when it was built. It made 223hp through a carb...

An EFI 3.4L pushrod would see around 160 at the wheels. Max. on a good day.

No I think someone ended up bolting a truleo onto that engine that dave built and it made like 19X whp. He posts here if I am not mistaken.

The carb'd 3.4L I built hooked to an auto trans had the following specs:
Engine dyno = 223hp (before dyno-tuning with the engine in the car)
Chassis Dyno = 197 rwhp (after tuning on a dyno, the baseline was 188 rwhp prior to tuning on the dyno.)

"Ditch" now has this engine in his car.

The 3.4L I built for a friends Fiero with the trueleo, 19# injectors, 62mm TB, H272 cam, and tuned on the dyno hooked thru a getrag 5-spd ran 205 rwhp.

The engines were most likely very close to identical at the crank horsepower. It's just the manual trans had less driveline loss then the slushbox (auto trans).

I think that as long as it looks like stock with valve covers an intake with the logo, there are no one that will think that the engine is not stock.

So, a 3.4 pushrod engine from a 95 Camaro is a good choice for me. I think that a 3.4 DOHC is to risky…

What kind of camshaft can give me some more hp out of this 3.4 pushrod v6? Do I need the wiring harness from the Camaro? Is it “a boltâ€

Thanks dave for clearing that up. I am sure you have posted about it tons of times but I still can't keep teh numbers straight. You ever get the dyno from that guy? I would like to see the curve of the powerband.

The engine comes from any 93-95 Camaro.

It's essentially the same as a larger 2.8, so I believe your stock harness will hook right up. If you want to use your automatic, it will bolt on, but you'll need to grind a little bit off the 3.4 block.

Most popular cam seems to be the Crane H272.

Here's some links. I don't think there's anything on this site, is there?
