Airport Security is useless
I feel sorry for the dumb fucks that try to jack a plane these days.

He got thrown to the ground when the pilot slammed the brakes, and a stewardess threw boiling water on him before he was swarmed by the passengers.
Honestly? I'm surprised there was enough left of him afterwards to arrest. :salute:
Key point to note is that he wasn't carrying a box cutter, he had TWO PISTOLS (i.e., REAL weapons). Which didn't stop him from taking it like a rented mule.

"Oh, this is too good. She thinks you're a servant... Cause you're black! This is greatest moment in my miserable life... Sooo-ey! I LOVE RACISM!"
Point is, it kinda makes the whole security scene somewhat redundant.
Keep the bomb-sniffing dogs, but the rest is useless. The passengers will take care of things.
Hell, let EVERYONE on board with a knife. Next idiot to jack a plane with a razor blade is going to get disemboweled with a plastic spoon, and hung with a noose made of his own intestines.

One funny thing about airport security is the inconsistency of it. In January I went to Istanbul. One the way there I went through security ONCE in Billings, MT and that was it. On the way back I had to go threw security twice in Istanbul, once in Frankfurt with everyone being patted down, and then again in Denver.

I can't stand flying. Not only are they making the "security" procedures more rediculous and ultimately ineffectual, they airlines are so profit oriented that they'll shove as much cattle on board with no room to move about, breathing the exhaled bacteria of hundereds of others, and risking pulmunary embolisms. Airlines have turned into Greyhound buses with wings.

Not to get the thread off topic, but did you go to the grand bazaar? That place is sweet.Unsafe At Any Speed wrote:One funny thing about airport security is the inconsistency of it. Yeah, a couple times. I was there for almost three weeks, so we had time to do quite a bit and to do it leisurly too.derangedsheep wrote:Not to get the thread off topic, but did you go to the grand bazaar? Do you guys remember the big "liquid explosives" scare some people dreamed up awhile back? How you mix two (three, including an acid as a catalyst) liquids and magically, you have explosives? Well, there was one BIG thing they overlooked:
Their explosive scanners do NOT test for organic peroxide type explosives like Acetone Peroxide (trimer/dimer), already made, and hidden in something. When we flew out to the midwest for a friends wedding, I watched several TSA guys swab and scan my friends XBOX360, and was studying the screen while they ran the tests. The things seem to check for all your basic nitrate based explosives - nitroglycerine (also dynamite), RDX (like C4), PETN, nitrocelulose, you name it, but there wasn't any check for TATP or the like. That XBOX could have been carrying 10 lbs of the stuff, and nobody would have known until it's too late.
Hell, it's even in the news, that TATP is the terrorists weapon of choice. So why aren't they scanning for it? Morons.

It's a commentary on the whole idea of screening. People aren't going to follow the old rule of "Shut up, sit down, let the Police handle it" rule on airplanes. The Dark Side of Will wrote:He took off from Mauritania. That doesn't say anything about US airport security.
The increased security measures are a waste of time and money. Air flight isn't seen as a "soft target" anymore. People will expect the worst, and any potential hijacker is going to have to fight. ACTUAL terrorism precludes open confrontation if at all possible.
Any real terrorist wanting to cause damage and fear won't be doing it with an airplane.

well, inconsistancy is VERY hard to plan for.Unsafe At Any Speed wrote:One funny thing about airport security is the inconsistency of it. In January I went to Istanbul. I understand that. I just found it funny that all these other airports, airlines and countries trusted the security procedures of a (relatively) small airport in Billings.Pyrthian wrote:well, inconsistancy is VERY hard to plan for.Unsafe At Any Speed wrote:One funny thing about airport security is the inconsistency of it. It's also harder to hit a moving target--but running around in circles on a shooting range will still get me shot.Pyrthian wrote: well, inconsistancy is VERY hard to plan for.
It's a waste of money and time--using the funds they have, they can't even set up a consistent and reliable grid. The only thing they EXCEL at is holding up lines.
Tell me; how many people have they actually stopped that were carrying bonafide dangerous weapons?
And how many of those were arrested and convicted of terror offenses?
The answer--of course--is none.
I've got a rock here... It keeps away tigers, and it works. When's the last time anyone saw a tiger in Winnipeg? Wanna buy it?

are airports private or public?
so, what responsibility do they have to you?
I dont fly much, maybe once a year. but, I have yet to have ANY troubles at ANY airport. only once was international. if ya consider Canada international...
and - even more: I smoke. during flights with layovers - jumping out of secure areas to smoke, and then get back in secure areas - no troubles.
I also have no problems getting my weed thru. :thumbleft:

Airports are sticky. They are owned by private companies, but managed and run and regulated by public offices.
They have a couple of responsibilities to me--as a customer (We pay admission). These responsibilities are shared with the airline:
1) To provide adequate facilities for the aircraft
2) Provide site security for myself and my baggage
3) Provided that I meet all requirements, ensure that I do not miss my flight
