Read "The Food Revolution"..You might think differently of many animals..cows are sentient..and very smart..would you eat your dog?? Cows are smarter..so are pigs

There are varying degrees of intelligence... Just cause a critter's reasonably smart doesn't make it sentient.

Before you make a statement such as that, I would read that book. Just because we can't communicate with the animals, doesn't mean we rule over them, or that they're not sentient. Humans just have the ability to use an alphabet to communicate, and use their hands in order to manipulate the world around them. However many animals are incredibly intelligent, including some of the ones that we eat here in America. Other animals ((mammals)) in which we don't eat may even be more intelligent than we are. WE can only gauge intelligence by our made up factors. Just because a dolphin doesn't know our symbols or our systems of language. Doesn't mean that animal isn't sentient. Same with a cow, pig, elephant..you name it..

Whatever..

Just because you can have a conversation with a parrot (and yes, you can have a real conversation with a parrot--just have to teach it how to talk and not just parrot) doesn't mean that it contemplates what will happen to it in a month or a year or after it dies.

And with your assertion that some may be smarter than us comes the inevitable question... how do you measure intelligence? You can't make that claim without some way to measure. Humans beat everything else out in pretty much everything.

What about the person born severely retarded with no capability of learning speech, es=xists only to eat and shit? Is that person a sentient being?
(I've seen some that would make some good eating)

A parrot mimicks speach. But animals have a higher intelligence level than you would think. Before making an uninformed statement on the issue. I suggest you read The Food Revolution or Diet for a New America..both by John Robbins.. Even us human beings are nothing more than animals..stop with the big ego..you're nothing more than a chimp..as we all are

Speaking of "uninformed statements", man is not a chimp . Man > Dolphin, Man > chimp, Cockroach > Man(so much for ego). Survival of the fittest isnt about the strongest or the smartest, it's about the most adaptable.

We've all read things others haven't. Parrots mimic speach because no one ever teaches them language. You CAN teach a parrot language and hold a conversation with it. It's been done. That doesn't mean it can understand helicopter aerodynamics or calculate a Fourier series or wonder about what happens after it dies.

In addition to parrots being able to actually speak, gorillas can learn sign language (and have alien hybrid offspring if you watch X-files).

Man = Homo sapiens
Chimp = Pan troglodytes

Man =/= Chimp

So what's the metric of intelligence?

I agree, man is just a clever animal. Its hard to measure inteligence of other animals. Elephants morn their dead and have a "burial grounds" They have larger brains than us, who knows how intelligent they are. Its tough to teach a 6 ton animal to do tricks, would you listen to something the size of a poodle?

Blue whales also have massive brains. They could be a whole lot smarter than we give them credit for.

I hate the arrogance of the human mind..I'm sure that those two creatures have the incredible potential of being smarter than us. Hey, atleast they don't destroy the environment they live in for temporary pleasures. Sounds pretty smart to me. We're the morons of the animal kingdom. We do more damage than anything..

I thought the text book definition of intelligence was: Creatures that can use tools. Whales / Dolphins / Elephants havent grasped that concept. When is the last time you have seen an Elephant take a tree log and smash a predator.

AFAIK, only Man and the monkey have displayed that behaviour. I wouldnt eat either, but everything else is fair game in my opinion. I have a friend who is from Indonesia, she not only eats dogs, but also has one as a pet. I asked her, "Why dont you eat your dog Rudy?". She replied, "We only eat the ugly ones."

If you take a biblical perspective, then you are justified in killing any animal, cause god says so.

If you take a darwin perspective, humans have closely set eyes and good stereoscopic vision, indicating we are built to hunt and eat live food.

What I find remarkable is that there is a 2 page thread on meat and only a 1 page thread on hot girls.

Well... taking the parrot example again: Parrots suck at tool making, but they obviously have some level of intelligence because they can be trained to talk to you.

There are many different aspects to intelligence... to name a few: tool making and spatial manipulation, communication, problem solving, abstract thought, creativity and art, and the big boy: self awareness and the ability to contemplate one's own demise.

Only in humans are all of these traits manifested.

I wonder elephants don't ever organize attacks against lions and other animals that prey upon them? :dontknow:

by DiggityBiggity
Elephants don't need to coordinate attacks against the lions. The lions pick on the week and dying elephants. It's their time to go anyway.

And as far as using tools..we have a thumb, which enables us to build said tools. Dolphins and other mammals don't, but that doesn't mean they aren't intelligent, or even Sentient..again..we are so damn arrogant..
