I recently replaced my center brake light with the usual 889 lamp. The guy at autozone had to check for himself to be sure I knew what I was talking about, and he says they're usually used in fog lights. It melted my original housing, and it's working on my current one.
I wonder if any of you have found a suitable lower wattage lamp, or LED?

That lamp sure does roast the housing while it's on, but it's only when you're using the brakes anyway.
LED replacements suffer from poor or inconsistent viewing angles, but there are a few available that fit, perhaps with minor modifications. Check superbrightleds.com.

As you can see, they're doing just that. Easy choice, get the diode from them. Or find the same diode on your own (see Steven's post).
Viewing angle will only be an issue with the light board behind the lens, the "bulb" version will reflect off the back of the housing. Every luxury car built within the last decade is using LED tails and high mounts. I light about every street sign behind me for a mile with the Lexus at night. The only situation where another driver might not be able to see the light is if they're about to T bone your Fiero.
