Anybody know how the guys on ebay do it?

Basically what happens is (for instance) a car comes in, gets diagnosed with a headgasket leak, the engine costs more to repair than to replace, so it gets replaced... Then the old engine gets tossed out back as a "core"... From there I think they get sent to scrap dealers? How can I get my hands on one of these cores?

Anybody tried it?

Work at the dealer as a mechenic. Works good for me. I have a 40K mile Ecotec I got for free that way. :bootyshake: I just need to put it back together with a new headgasket. :thumbleft:

Unless you know someone you are going to have a hard time. The employee's (where I use to work) were told to take a slege hammer to the block before the people come and pick them up for recycling. If you know someone they usually dont care if you take it.

I have one here. I haven't taken it apart but there is a nice little hole in the oil pan. It thru a rod the owner said. Rick B

free huh? Maybe I just need to grease up some mechanics with money.

Another way is to go to a scrap yard and see if they will let you buy engines from there. Some places won't let you, but my father goes to a local place that lets him buy complete engines for $40 each. He mostly looks for engines where he can sell the cylinder heads, like SBCs, escort, and cavalier heads. He has found a few 4 bolt SBCs that were rebuildable that he makes good money off of. He has even seen a Porsche engine in there before. Sometimes the block is cracked, or the heads, so it is kind of a gamble.
