Hi my name is Jason and I am new to the forum and soon to be new to the Fiero craze....I am an avid car nut (Owned many 5.0 Mustangs) looking for some insight as to what to look for when purchasing a fiero. I recently came across two 1984 Fiero's that need work to be put back on the road..one is a 84 SE 2.5L Auto and the other the same except 4 speed manual. I can get them both for 450 canadian....is this a good deal and what should I be looking for when I go take a look...Any help any of you could give would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Jason

Jason,

Dont buy an 84 unless your just looking for something cheap to get around town in.

Your lookin for something cool? Go with a 85se or something along the lines of a aero notchback.

Dont get caught up in the fastback look... its actually heavier and less aerodynamic! Plus it looks fat and lazy.

Oh! And next time make your topic "need advice on buying first fiero" or something.

Fat and lazy? :la:

Don't listen to him. Buy yourself a nice Fastback GT. They were only made from 86-88. I have yet to hear someone who isn't into fieros say the notchback looks better than a fastback.

Donk- :asshole:

The fastback looks better, but its a PITA to work on. For your first one, get a notchie, you'll thank yourself when the repairs start (day one)

I'm thanking God I don't own a notchback, even if it means reaching over the sails to fix it. Totally worth it.

Mine is fat and lazy too.

Notchbacks are like the gay cousin of fieros. I wanted a fiero because at first i thought they were all fastbacks. I saw the notches and were like wtf

I was brainwashed with the typical crappy bumperbad 84 image that in my mind showed all Fieros. A friend suggested a Fiero when I put my Z34 for sale, I told him he was fucking crazy. He showed me a few pics of osme Ebay GTs, and a year and a half later, I have 2

Gotta love those smoooooth light lines. Elegant. Sporty. Agile. Exotic.

I think even the aero notchback looks fat. Not so much as a fastback, but still..

I was just looking for some information as to what to look for as in rusting out of certain areas (ie strut towers wheel wells etc...) If one of you could let me know it would be appreciated.

As far as the clow aero dynamic thing well a nice super charged 350 will fix that....

Rust:
battery tray & surrounding area
sides of trunk
front undercarriage
engine cradle

Other things to check:
Coolant tubes - run right under the door sills and get crushed by injudicious use of jacks
Brake/clutch hydrauli/transmission cooler lines - run next to coolant tubes and get rusty
Clutch action - I've never had the typical issues, but lots of other people have problems with clutch hydraulics... mostly getting them bled correctly, but part failure contributes as well.

I'll second the motion to avoid the 84's. Body style preference is a matter of personal taste, I've seen examples of both that work for me and don't work for me at all. Will has you pretty well covered on the things to look for. I'm sure for that price the headlight motors are going to be shot. The coolant overflow tank will be broken at the mounting tabs, and the windshield wiper motor (especially if it has intermittant wipers) will have a short making it do phantom swipes, so check that out too.

Oh, and the gas cap release is behind your left shoulder.

And to release the parking brake, you pull up on the handle while pushing the button in until the button pushes in all the way, then let it down.

And to set the parking brake, you pull it up, and then put the handle back down. You don't have to risk your nutsack crawling over it.

Haha! I didn't realize this was also an issue until my friend was trying awkwardly to get out of a Fiero with the parking break set.. he didn't realize it dropped back down.
