What do you think of this 3.1 setup? Built by McLaren!

How do you think this swap would be in a Fiero?

The ad says:
This is a 3.1 liter V6 engine out of a 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix Turbo. There were only 3,000 of these cars made this year. The car was in an accident, but I pulled the engine out. The car had 90,000 miles on it. It ran good, but the turbo will need to be rebuilt. The turbo bearings are worn, and the engine burned oil. The impellers however DID NOT hit the housing. This is a good thing, as the cost of the rebuild will not be that much. The engine comes factory with forged pistons and a different camshaft, as to what I have researched. All of the parts are there, the turbo and the mid pipe between the manifolds was taken off in order to remove the engine from the car. I don't know too much other than that. The car produced 200 horsepower and 260 ft lbs of torque. They were made by McLaren, and were only produced in limited quantities for a couple of years. I was planning on putting it into my 91 Cavalier z24, but don't have time, and it is getting in the way. It is bolted to the transmission that has also been modified to take the extra horsepower. I would strongly urge anyone seriously interested to email me or call me with questions, as I would be happy to answer. My phone is 203553-35305-3533345. Please email me at Ittmpgfrtalatss1031166031@yah66o.com. SHIPPING WILL DEPEND ON LOCATION, ITEM WEIGHS 650LBS WITH TRANSMISSION. I STRONGLY URGE PICK UP IF POSSIBLE. ITEM IS SOLD AS IS.

Somebody that is into these setups told me that this engine can support 500 whp with stock internals and some light modification...

I have yet to see one internally stock TGP motor do 500 whp. Tell that guy he is full of shit.

Doing tht swap would take as much effort as a regular aluminum head swap or a gen 3 swap. I would prefer a gen 3 swap personally over that engine. Better heads and intakes.

In order to get 500 hp from that you would need a rather large turbo. Larger then the T28 that comes on it stock. FYI, a T28 is smaller then the T3's on every other Fiero and they make what 220 crank hp? The fieros that is. The TGP motors were rated at 205 hp.

They didn't make 260 ft lbs stock.. more like 225.

It's been so long since I've had sex, I can't remember who gets tied up.
The dude put it all up on eBay, which has about a million times the number of users as our forum. I doubt we're doing much harm.

On topic, I'd build my own turbo motor before I'd spend the time to swap in the 3.1 Turbo. Not worth the effort for what you get.

From what I've heard, the TGP engines got a high nickel block, nitrided crankshaft and specific stronger (still cast, not forged) pistons.

I'll take the high nickel block and nitrided crankshaft. The high nickel block can't be had anywhere else and nitriding your own crankshaft costs money.

Those are the only parts worth anything. You'd have to go with some pretty good heads (3400 heads maybe?) to get the top end to match what the bottom end would be capable of. Considering the rarity of the 3.1 Turbo, I'd build a Turbo 3.4 DOHC from the get go and be done with it. Would be cool to see what that 3.1 can do, though, if you managed to find the parts and do the work.

I just happen to have a TGP 3.1 turbo in my engine shed...
Maybe I should look at Shaun's ported Gen II heads for it...

Cool, go for it. Steven and I found one in a junkyard once, but it was pretty thrashed and we didn't have the time to pull it and see if anything was actually worth saving.

Did I tell you I later found one in an LA yard with a rebuilt motor and turbo and nowhere to put it if I pulled it? :-(

Fucking sucks. There seems to be a bunch of great shit down there in LA - 284's, Northstars in the junkyard, 96-97 3.4 DOHC's, etc. You can imagine my surprise when I stumbled on that DOHC 97 Monte Carlo in the JY up in Eureka, of all places. Almost didn't manage to get the intake tract for lack of tools, but I made do with what we had. Lost about a pint of blood in the process in exchange. Bah. Space is another consideration, entirely.

Hell, I'd hoist complete motors up to my dorm room to store them if I had the space...

Hah! Hardcore!

When I was in P'cola, I raided the local I-Pull-It for all the 282's I could get. I put them on pieces of cardboard and shoved them into the corner of my room at the BOQ until I could get them to my parents' place.
