1984 SD4 Resurrection
I bought a car from eBay in November. It sold for $1575.
I'm going to try to chronicle my "rebuild" of the car.
The car an 1984 SE, it has 33000 miles on the ODO. I have most of the receipts and the original window sticker.
An SD4, with what I believe the iron EGR head was built and installed in 1985. The motor is seized according to the ad.
Here are the pictures from the ad:

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
I tried shipping the car via a freight carrier, that was a nightmare. I used the bank to get my deposit returned on my card, after 3 months of being jerked around by the shipper.
On Valentine's Day weekend, a buddy and I drove his 1999 F350 with a broken 4x4 system and a beat up old flatbed with fenders we cobbled together the night before form Milwaukee WI to NY state (Pleasant Valley).
We loaded the car in 10-15 degree below zero temps, and headed off trying to beat the incoming snow the best we could.
We didn't, and it took over 24 hours to get back home as we snailed through IN, OH, and PA at a breakneck 35mph average speed. Once home, the car was frozen to the trailer until this weekend. And the 21st of February it was warm enough to use the car wash to blast most of the ice and slush away.
I pushed the car off the trailer by pulling and pushing with another car, and swapped wheels for some that hadn't fallen off the beads and could hold air.
in case you may not have noticed, one of the fenders didn't make it. We pulled it off and brought it back in the bed of the truck.

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
Here are some of the documents included:
Lots of engine build notes
I cant find much on the cam though. Lunati SP295-522 is all I see, nothing in Google about this grind.
And the head I believe is 10031327, but a lot of the receipts show it as never being bought or shipped, but there are some scribbling's I cant make out about it.
There's about 20 sheets of orders and invoices

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
seems like a great deal. can't wait to see more once the weather warms up and you are able to dig into it more.
Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
I dealt with that shipping bullshit years ago (USF Holland) and also had VISA refund me.
That's a good looking little car. You should consider putting the aero rockers and rear bumper on it. Whatcha gonna do with that SD4? Toss it out for something better? Seems like an expensive engine for not a huge amount of output for todays standards. Its a period correct neat factor though I suppose. Look forward to seeing update.

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
Body here is the biggest issue. I can fix this engine easily enough if all it needs is some bearings, cleaning, light machining, and reassembly.
It's ugly, but I really like the period correct idea. The owner blew a ton of cash on it, and I find it a cool 80's car culture time machine.
Based on what I see its a 250hp motor, and it will sound all rowdy and smell like excess fuel if it ran. I'm into that.
But, I have too many projects...
and now add:
a 1984 Fiero SE super duty rats nest.
I think Ill go the easy and try to use all the parts it has and make it what it once was, which I think would be sort of cool, correct to the period but totally not stock.
Aero parts would be cool, but I don't have any notchback parts, and I don't think I want to pay want people want to charge for them...

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
Most people who have looked into the super duty engines have seen KRP have blocks and crankshafts available. http://www.kansasracingproducts.com/Kan ... rices.html
It's not commonly known that NAjr has aluminum SD blocks also, and they cost less!

looking at the pictures, it looks like it's drilled for either pattern.

Awesome! I knew about MOPAR aluminum midget motors, but this is news to me. The possibilities for a lightweight high revving high boosted aluminum 4 are endless!FieroWanaBe1 wrote: It's not commonly known that NAjr has aluminum SD blocks also, and they cost less!

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
I've been mulling the idea of a NASCAR headed 4.125" bore 3.5" stroke aluminum motor.
It would be so nice....
I need to keep my wants in check though.
I'm certain I have the 3 Cam Bearing Block, believe these blocks have SD 2.5 cast in the side, The later 5 cam bearing blocks I have seen have Super Duty 2.5 Cast in.
That makes the NAJr block even more Appealing...

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
Ok.
Two new-old-stock parts are on the way for this car.
10049801 — Super Duty Four High Port Special Aluminum Cylinder
Head
This version of Pontiac’s Super Duty four-cylinder aluminum cylinder head's
are designed for maximum-effort competition engines. The intake runners
and water jackets are raised .670" to improve flow. In the Special High Port
casting, the two center intake ports are moved .800" closer together to
straighten the path to the valves. Both heads’ rocker cover rails are raised
.300", and the exhaust ports are raised .600". The valve centerlines are
relocated to unshroud the valves, and the rocker stud holes are moved to
match the new valve locations. The valve seats will accept 1.94–2.08" intake
valves and 1.60–1.625" exhausts. The combustion chamber volume is 67cc.
Technical Notes: Valve guides are supplied but not installed. A template is
provided for redrilling headers to fit the revised exhaust flange bolt pattern.
An intake manifold must be fabricated to fit the High Port Special's port
spacing.
and
10031328 — Engine Hardware Package
This package includes all of the small parts which are required to assemble a
Super Duty four-cylinder engine. It contains a front engine cover, thermostat
housing, water pump, water inlet, pushrod guideplates, timing pointer, and a
complete selection of plugs, bolts, clamps, pins, and fasteners.

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
I received the parts.
"brand new" with raw bowls, un-machined seats, and the guides are not yet installed.
these ports are very big, especially for a 4.020" bore
The intake ports are huge
I emailed Jesel about a shaft rocker setup for this head, the quote was $1200...
I inventoried the hardware kit, I am working on organizing the documentary photographs I took, Ill upload that soon, as well as more specs on this head as I measure things.
Don't worry my chump-car is being worked on too.

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
You mean this isn't for the Chump Car?!
Raised port goodness? Post flow numbers! I'm really curious about how this head would do vs. SBC or LS heas with the same valve sizes. The intake port geometry is less constrained on the 4 cylinder application.
Of course a 3.5 liter 4 cylinder turning 8500+ RPM will vibrate so much that it may get your girlfriend/wife off just riding in the car, while it may give you prostate injury just driving the car...
However, an SB2.2 headed 3.5 liter 4 will be able to make 350-400+ HP all motor and with the Arias block could probably take 30 psi of boost.

Given the option, I'd go for 4.155 x 4"... the smaller strokes don't give enough displacement to stress a NASCAR head at a reasonable RPM.FieroWanaBe1 wrote:I've been mulling the idea of a NASCAR headed 4.125" bore 3.5" stroke aluminum motor.

Re: 1984 SE Resurreciton
http://www.dyno-shop.com/pictures.html
there's an SD4 with a splayed valve head that would be an indication on what a SB2.2 head could do for the NAjr block.
"4 cyl. Iron Duke Super Duty Pontiac with Nickens/Chevy
splayed valve head on the dyno. 183 cubic inch, 390HP,
285 ft./lbs. Used in a NHRA Competition Eliminator
rail that runs 8's at over 150MPH! Launches at
7,200 RPM and goes through the traps at 9,400 RPM."
I'm hoping I can hit the very high 250's at the wheel with the 801 head.
I have obtained a very cool 1985 GM performance Parts catalog, a full copy of Pontiac Performance Plus (with Race car fold-out), And a couple of Hot Rod Magazines containing some SD4 articles.
I can post some snaps of the cool bits as soon as I find the best way to digitize them.
I did order a straight cut timing gear set, before they become unobtanium.
Here are some basic dimensions of the ports on the '801 head casting:
The intake is 1-1/4" X 1-15/16 x 5" long
The exhaust is a 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 D port and is 4" long
I am hoping to exercise a contact at PSI Engines to talk about looking into the crankshaft from the 3.0L Industrial engine (those heads are port injection capable now.)
Part number for the crankshaft is: 93442002
I am pretty sure it has the SBC flywheel bolt pattern though.

FYI for those that may care. Hilborn still lists an intake, that is stated to work on the '801 head:
