3.1 liter question.
Last weekend I did a timing chain gasket on a 96 skylark 3.1. When I pulled the harmonic ballancer there was a magnetic pickup behind it and the ballancer had a reluctor ring on it. Is this how the 3.1's pick up crank signal? I thought they would have a casting in the block, but I didnt look. If so, when I run DOHC on the aluminum engine (if it happens) I could use the 3.1 ballancer and the pickup (moddified to stay on the block) for the ignition system. I was planning on an aftermarket system like this, but it appears the 3.1 already has the setup.

Yes that was the crank shaft position sensor. GM did this on allot of their fwd engines. They have moved the sensor into the block on some engines ( dont ask me what ones ). On most of the older models you have to have a tool to allign the sensor so the balancer dosnt chew it up after you install it.
The nice thing about the sensor being there is if the car dies and wont start and that is the reason ( happens more than you would think ), you can spray the sensor with some brake cleaner or anything cold and the car usually fires right up. This only works if the car dies when it gets hot. Then you dont have to push the car into the shop/ tow it to the shop and it diagnoses the problem.

Donk its a different reluctor ring then the signal you wuold use. It is a 24X I think. The obd 1 computer isnt' setup to use the same timing ring on the balancer that I know of.
Meaning I dont' think it is possible for you to take the balancer from a 3X00 car and use the obd1 computer to get the crank signal from.
if you can then I do beleive I have a balancer here which you can have.

No as stated thats the 24X crank trigger. It is used in conjunction with the Camshaft Possition sensor for SFI opperation.p8ntman442 wrote: Is this how the 3.1's pick up crank signal?
The gen3's (3x00's) still use the same 7X reluctor on the crank and the same CKP sensor at the back of the block for ignition/crank signal.

Also Donk I do believe its a OBD 2 thing. THe 7730 uses the 7X crank signal for the ECM
You have the DOHC blocks taht have the crank position sensor so what do you need the SFI balancer for?

maybee 95, it had the coil packs. Its deffinatly a 3100 I doubt you could recut the wheel, its like a metal screen. I could however build you a circuit to condition the signal from a 24x to a 7x output. Let me know if you want to go that way.

This particular laser can cut any 2D shape desired out of anything from sheet metal to 3/4" plate.
Where is the pickup for this wheel attached?
