dissassembling cv joint?

Post by dratts »

Does anyone know how to remove the final piece of the cv from the axle? I have the cage off and need to remove the other piece before lengthening the axles 4"

:salute:

I bet it was covered in grease... That'd do it.

Yeah, the inside one was. The outside you couldn't see until you slid the part back a ways. I still felt a little stupid for not seeing it. Thanks again, I love the internet!

Actually it wasn't that hard once I located them. I just grabbed them with my needle nose visegrips, but talk about grease everywhere!

Yeah, I don't have a set of needle nose vicegrips. I had to grind down the tips on my snap ring pliers and do it that way. I was not happy.

Could my axle be missing one of these snap rings? I can literlly slide the axle out of the boot. I never actually took it all the way out, but i bet it could. Last time I blew the isuzu, i noticed the axle was barely together, it was just hanging together by the small end of the boot (on the trans side) floppin around. I picked it up pushed it back together and reinstalled it.

The axel freely floats in and out of the cv housing.

You have to be careful if it falls out though, the roller bearings are not held in place by anything, they can fall off. I had a small thread with some pics.

CV joint grease is second only to the silicone fluid in fluid covered--I mean fluid filled engine mounts for being the nastiest stuff on a car.
