Need info on what i need for a tranny swap!

Post by SGT.ROCK »

I want to swap my 4-speed trans.to a 5-speed but I dont know what all it takes to complete this. I'm trying to find a V-6 5-speed tranny from a V-6 Fiero .whats the best alternative as far as the ones that came in the front wheel drive cars? My Fiero is a 1986 V-6 by the way.If someone here could take the time and post everything I would need to do this swap I would be greatful.I'm taking the car to a local AAMCO shop because I'm no mechanic. I know that RodneyDickman has the brackets I need . Do I need cables and a 5-speed shifter? Are the axles splines the same? Are the mounts the same? Is the clutch and flywheel different? Please help! Thanks....

I believe you would need a tranny, clutch, cables, shifter, slave cylinder and the brackets that connect the tranny to the mount. Also, the reverse light wiring will have to be changed, and if you use a FWD tranny (from a V6 GM car) you will need rodney dickmans kit.

If the car is an 86, the harness should contain the wiring for the 5 speed (tranny mounted) reverse light switch. You'll probably have to unwrap some tape. Then just plug it in.

All manual tranny Fiero axles are the same.
Muncie, Isuzu, Getrag.

The clutch "should" work. I've only heard of one instance where a 4 speed was converted to a 5 speed (Isuzu) and "something" was too thick, preventing full clutch engagement. (He never did figure out exactly what, though.)
You will need the correct throwout bearing for whatever tranny you use.
