crappy dyno run

Post by dgzfiero »

Last January I had my coupe dyno'd. Results should be here.
phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2420&highlight=
Took my coupe to the dyno again today, it wasn't a good day for it. The first run was 223 hp and 190ish torque. 3800SC 3.4 pulley. After that the numbers were all downhill.

The motor hooked up.

Getting strapped down.

Thought this was a neat pic of the front rim.
Anyways the first run it had 4 degrees of timing and a bunch of KR? I think. It was running leaner then the computer guy wanted. On the second run he added more fuel to the program that got rid of the knock and some of the torque numbers, hp stayed about the same the leanness went away. The guy in the car said it was bucking and starting to miss some.
On the third run it didn't get a full scan in it lost the tach signal at the tuning computer for some reason, the guy also said it was bucking some still. We checked for loose vacuum lines, connections, loose belt and stuff.
The fourth run was just as bad wouldn't rev over 5k.Motor still missing and bucking.
After discussing it some we figured it might be the 4 year old plugs. I haven't thought to change them till now. The computer tuner guy suggested Autolite 104 plugs gapped to .040. They should be 2 heat ranges colder then the stock ones that are in it whatever they are. I didn't bother getting a sheet for this session.

COOL THANKS FOR SHARING Oops. How much boost does a 3.4 pulley putout? 9 psi?

Sucks that the car wasn't cooperating. I wonder if it was an ignition problem. Wonder if maybe the coils or wires are starting to wear out.

Pull your plugs though and see what they look like 4 years old is old, but might still be good pending on how well the car was maintained and how it was driven those 4 years.
FieroPhrek working on that ls4 swap for 20 years and counting now. 20 years!!!!! LOL

The computer tuner guy said a 3.4 pulley should be 10 or 11 psi. I'll get a boost gauge on it the next time it's ran. I've ran the shit out of it some, took it easy some. Also 91 octane gas.

yea you have that 91 piss fuel in cali.

Probably not possible to find a higher octane is there. What about some drop in octane boosters? the 91 isn't helping much but there prob isnt' much yiou can do about it. Just have to tune for it.

.040 is too small, you can go up to a .050 on the 3.4 autolite 104s.

(I'm running AL104 gapped at .053 for instance.) My 5spd car with 3.4 put down 250/290.

Your timing is WAAY low, either go to a larger pulley, or get some more mods on that thing. I'm at 7psi on my 3.4 pulley at just under 18* max timing. Either that or run the car with no SC belt and see if its still dropping, it might be false KR killing your advance. GL with it.

I guess I forgot the timing after the first run. On the first run it was at 4 max timing, the KR was killin g the timing. On the rest of the runs it was running 20 deg max timing with no KR.
I am going to check the wires and stuff when I put/check the plugs. I'll keep the .050 gap in mind.

Dunno where in OK you are, but in the OKC area all the Sinclair's seem to sell 93 octane, maybe they do where you're at? I wouldn't have thought 2 points would make a lot of difference, then I had to go from 93 to 91 in my Talon (before E85!). Night and day.

.040 too small? LOL, I have my Camaro's gapped at .030 and my Talon's at .028. :D

Apparently I live on the low performance side of town. The sinclair down the street from me makes all my rides run like crap. They only have 91 there or any of the other stations around my house in OKC.

Well I finally got the garage warm enough for me to work in. I think I found out why it was running bad on the dyno.

That is the #6 plug. It's an NGK PTR4B-15, other then this one the plugs looked good. The gap was around .070 on the rest of them.

EDIT Thanks for the tip TDSoW

Remove the # from the filename and it should display correctly.

Ah yes, the old street reacing days when we used to go down to Van Nuys Airport and get 114 octane Aviation fuel ( Av Gas for short ).... You can get away with using Xylene with a full tank of gas, it will push 91 up a few points...available at your local Home depot

It's not missing. It's still in the cylinder someplace.
